EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

The UK market for commercial & industrial doors and shutters is believed to have increased by 9 percent in 1995 to reach a value of £211.6 million at manufacturers' selling prices. The market is projected to be increased by a further 6 percent, at constant 1995 prices, during 1996.

Demand for commercial & industrial doors reflects trends in the commercial and industrial building sectors. Consequently the downturn in activity in such construction projects in the early 1990s significantly constrained demand. Other factors which are also believed to affect demand for these doors include the greater awareness of the need for energy efficiency and security fears.

MSI forecast that the UK market for commercial & industrial doors and shutters will enjoy strong growth in real value terms during the remainder of the decade, as the recovery in the construction sector gathers momentum. Steel doors are expected to account for as much as 22 percent of the total UK market for commercial & industrial doors and shutters in 1996.

The sector reached a value of £49.5 million in 1995, with marginal real growth expected in 1996. The main applications for steel doors include industrial units, pharmaceutical plants, water treatment works, food preparation rooms, hospitals and prisons.

The UK market for steel rolling shutters increased by a nominal 3 percent in 1995 to £40.2 million, representing 19 percent of the total commercial & industrial doors and shutters market. MSI project that the market will grow by a further 5 percent, at constant 1995 prices, during 1996.

During 1995 the UK market for non-automatic aluminium shop-front doors increased by 12 percent to £43.3 million. However, MSI project that this market will decline by as much as 8 percent at constant prices during 1996.

The UK market for automatic doors increased by 18 percent in 1995 to an estimated value of £31.5 million at manufacturers' selling prices, which includes both the control and the door element of the package. Further strong growth of 21 percent is projected for 1996 in real value terms.

Demand for sectional overhead doors has increased substantially in recent years. Indeed the value of the market reached £25.6 million in 1995, compared with just £20.8 million in 1992. Further strong growth of 12 percent, at constant 1995 prices, is expected during 1996.

The UK market for high speed doors, which are usually used in industrial environments, increased by some 67 percent between 1992 and 1995 to reach £18.4 million. MSI project that demand for high speed doors will increase by as much as 19 percent, at constant 1995 prices, during 1996.

UK demand for flexible doors is closely linked to trends in the industrial construction sector and, as such, the market declined significantly during the recession. Moreover the sector has been affected by competition from other types of doors, most notably high speed doors. MSI estimate that the value of the flexible doors market was some £3.1 million in 1995, with a 3 percent decline in real value terms expected to be recorded during 1996.
