An MSI Landscape report is a new concept - a short format report laid out as a Marketing Presentation. The facing page states those Facts that you, as the person undertaking the presentation, would be expected to know - in this instance, five paragraphs covering the recent activities of the market leaders and pertinent bullet points to enable you to create a hard-hitting presentation.

DEFINITIONS

i Definitions For the purposes of this report, total dental care expenditure has been segmented into the following two sectors:

• Public Sector - total expenditure refers to payments received from patients for treatments plus gross fees paid from public funds to GDPs for the number of adult and child registrations and for the number of treatments delivered
• Private Sector - total expenditure refers to the payments received by GDPs for the treatments delivered to private patients

For the purpose of this report, gross fee payments refers to the amount paid to GDPs working within the GDS and is segmented into the following types of payment:

• capitation - fee paid for every patient registered aged under 18 years for the care and treatment necessary to maintain oral health
• continuing care - fee paid for the provision of continuing care paid for every adult patient registered item of service -
• fee paid for each individual item of treatment the dentist claims for under the NHS fee scale

The term corporate dentistry used in the report refers to dental care that is provided by a corporate dental body.

The dental plan sector refers to the option of paying for dental treatment through either capitation scheme, dental insurance or a dental cash benefit.

The General Dental Service is the main service through which National Health Service dental treatment is provided. Additional dental services are provided through the hospital service and the community dental service: expenditure on these additional services is not included in this report.

The General Dental Council is the regulatory body of the dental profession and is responsible to the Privy Council. Any dentist who wishes to practice in the UK must be registered with the GDC.

All values are quoted at current prices unless otherwise stated.
