EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
MSI estimate that the French market for homes for
elderly people and domiciliary care reached a value of FF59.94 billion (ECU9.05
billion) in 1997. The accommodation sector is believed to account for 66 percent of
the total market whereas the medical care sector has an estimated share of
34 percent.
In 1997 the number of homes for elderly people
reached 9829 sites whilst the number of places reached 571 800. The average
number of places per home decreased from some 62.7 in 1993 to 58.2 places in
1997.
The market is segmented into three operators,
namely the public sector, the private non-profit making sector and private
profit making sector. MSI believe that the public sector accounted for 57 percent of
the total number of places in homes for elderly people in 1997 while the
private profit making sector is becoming increasingly important. Indeed, the
share of this sector increased from 12 percent in 1993 to 14 percent in 1997 due to a 25 percent
increase in the number of beds during the review period.
Trade sources estimate that the number of places
in nursing units represented 24 percent of the total number of places in homes for
elderly people in France.
Domiciliary care suppliers reported a significant
increase in popularity due to an increasing demand from patients to stay in
their own homes for as long as possible.
A number of factors affected demand for homes and
places for elderly people during the review period. Indeed, the ageing of the
population combined with the increasing level of dependency of elderly people
entering a home led to a rise in the number of places and to demand for more
homes providing medical care. In addition, the government's reform of
healthcare funding for homes for elderly people is of major importance for both
public and private operators.
MSI forecast that the French market for homes for
elderly people will continue to grow throughout the whole of the forecast
period, whereby the medical care sector is expected to increase at a faster
pace than the accommodation sector.
The trend towards smaller homes is expected to
continue throughout the forecast period which is evident due to the fact that
the number of homes for the elderly in France is expected to increase more
significantly then the number of places in these homes between 1998 and
2002.
Homes for elderly people and domiciliary care
organisations can either be run by public or private operators, profit or
non-profit making. The structure of the industry differs from one sector to
another due to different legislation and resources. However, there are many
companies or organisations involved in operating homes for elderly people with
only a limited number of large operators.
