EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

MSI estimate that the UK private healthcare market increased by some 3 percent in value terms during 1999 to œ 87 billion (EURO1 30 billion). Trade sources report that the private healthcare market has benefited from the fact that operators within the sector started to expand into niche markets, which are believed to be either inefficiently operated under the National Health Service or are outside the services offered by the public sector.

MSI believe that the independent nursing and residential home sector accounted for the largest proportion of the total value of the UK private healthcare market during the review period. Indeed, this sector accounted for some 75 percent of the total value of the private healthcare market in 19 MSI believe that this reflects the level of dependency of patients in long term care in the UK.

The value of the acute hospitals and clinics sector amounted to some œ 20 billion (EURO 41 billion) during 1999, accounting for 22 percent of the total value of the private healthcare market. MSI believe growth in this sector has been stimulated by the increase in the number of patients paying for treatment, which MSI believe is largely attributable to the length of patient waiting lists for treatment in National Health Service hospitals.

The UK market for private treatment in National Health Service hospitals accounted for the remaining 3 percent of the total value of the market during 19 Growth within this sector reflected the increase in the number of National Health Service Trusts seeking private sector operators for the development of new private patient facilities within National Health Service hospitals. Indeed, between 1991 and 1999 the market for private treatment in National Health Service hospitals increased by as much as 29 percent.

MSI believe that demand for private healthcare in the UK is affected by a number of factors, which include:

* demographic changes

* government policy

* funding

* private medical insurance

* national health service reforms

MSI forecast that the UK market for private healthcare will increase by some 12 percent in real terms between 2000 and 20 MSI expect that the market for private treatment in National Health Service hospitals will continue to grow at the fastest rate throughout the forecast period.

Although the independent nursing and residential homes sector will continue to account for the largest proportion of the UK private healthcare market during 1999, MSI expect that growth of the nursing and residential homes sector will be hindered by demographic changes during the forecast period. Trade sources report that between 2001 and 2004 there will be a fall in the number of over 85 year olds in the UK, reflecting the fall in the birth rate in the UK during the First World War. MSI believe that this will have a direct impact on the demand for places in nursing and residential homes.

MSI expect that the acute hospitals and clinics sector will increase by 10 percent in real terms between 2000 and 2004 and that private treatment in National Health Service hospitals is forecast to increase by a significant 24 percent in real terms during the same period.
