EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
MSI believe that the value of the UK elderly care
home accommodation market has grown continuously between 1994 and 1998. MSI
project that the market for care home accommodation increased by 4 percent in 1998 to
£7.70 billion (ECU11.70 billion). The growth in the market reflects
demographic pressures, although MSI believe that demand within the sector has
not been fully realised due to stringent local authority funding
restrictions.
The market for domiciliary care is believed to be
a developing sector which has grown significantly during the review period.
Although the majority of domiciliary care is still provided by local
authorities, MSI believe that the market for privately funded home care has
increased in importance. This reflects increasingly stringent eligibility
criteria being imposed by local authorities.
MSI believe that the private care home
accommodation market is becoming increasingly consumer orientated, with many
operators undertaking research to identify specific consumer groups' needs and
making allowances for these. Such initiatives include the recognition of the
specific cultural needs of ethnic minorities.
The Community Care Act has created unfavourable
market conditions for many operators, which have seen occupancy levels and
margins fall. In addition to this, local authorities, which remain the
industry's largest paymaster, are increasingly demanding higher standards of
accommodation and services from care home providers. This has had the effect of
driving down margins even further.
MSI believe that opportunities for care home
providers have been limited during the review period. However, opportunities
that have been available to suppliers include the opportunity to extend
portfolios of services to include domiciliary care and mental health services.
However, these opportunities have been subject to regional variations as the
contracting out of such services is often left to the discretion of individual
local authorities.
Opportunities have existed for suppliers of
medical consumables and non-medical products during the review period. This has
reflected the increases in the number of patients being admitted from acute
hospitals to care homes for rehabilitation and the increase in demand for IT
equipment respectively.
MSI forecast that growth within the UK care homes
market will continue, reflecting continuing demographic pressures, the
increased number of patients being transferred from the National Health Service
to social services for rehabilitation and the implications of the Royal
Commission's recommendations.
The structure of the UK care homes industry has
altered during the review period, reflecting a large amount of consolidation.
In particular, BUPA has acquired Community Hospitals Group, Goldsborough
Healthcare Group and Care First Group thereby establishing itself as the market
leader.
