EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Hospital expenditure on supplies has now reached
over 4.9 billion in 1998, resulting from a 31 percent rise in spending over the last
five years. Some 91 percent of this total expenditure comes from NHS hospitals, with
the remainder being due to independent hospitals.
Medical equipment accounts for 39 percent of total
hospital expenditure, with pharmaceuticals accounting for a further 28 percent of
expenditure. Medical consumables accounted for some 11 percent of the total, with
non-medical products accounting for the remainder of hospital expenditure.
Additional funding which will allow an increase in
hospital throughput is expected to result in significantly higher spending over
the coming few years. Hospital expenditure is expected to rise by 8 percent in 1999,
and by almost 50 percent between 1999 and 2003.
The strongest growth in expenditure is expected to
come from pharmaceuticals, with expenditure on medical equipment also forecast
to out-perform the market.
Opportunities for suppliers of medical equipment
are expected to arise from the completion of PFI-funded hospitals.
An increase in the use of day-case surgery is
expected to further boost the market for a wide range of medical and
pharmaceutical products.
Changes in the structure of the NHS and the
abolition of the `internal market' will have an impact on the way in which
hospitals purchase their supplies.
Further major changes are expected in hospital
purchasing due to the changing importance of risk assessment and the assessment
of value for money in the purchase decision, while in the shorter-term the need
to ensure Year 2000 compliance will also drive some sales. Conversion to
accounting systems based on the EURO will also become a priority.
Changes to the NHS Supplies Authority will result
in the Authority taking a more proactive role within the health services
supplies management, and will impact on the hospital supply chain.
