KEY FINDINGS

1 KEY FINDINGS · MSI believe that during 2001, UK hospitals' expenditure on hospital supplies amounted to some £5.5 billion (€8.9 billion), representing a 6 percent increase on the previous year.

· NHS hospitals are by far the largest consumer of hospital supplies. In 2001 the NHS accounted for some 92 percent of total UK hospitals' expenditure on hospital supplies.

· MSI have identified that a number of factors have been attributable to stimulating demand within this market, including government policies, demographic changes, the health of the nation, and hospital in-patient activity.

· The NHS Plan has been implemented to bring about what are claimed to be the most significant changes to the NHS in its entire history. Indeed, the Plan proposes to make radical changes in order to provide the efficient and effective healthcare service which is required by the public. MSI believe that implementing these changes will result in further spending within the hospital supplies market. Moreover, MSI believe that the 2000 Concordat between the public and private healthcare sectors will mean greater use of private hospital facilities by the NHS. This will enable NHS hospitals to reduce their waiting lists, and create further demand for hospital supplies.

· Expenditure on medical equipment accounted for the largest proportion of total expenditure on hospital supplies in 2001. However, expenditure on pharmaceuticals recorded the most significant increase of 10 percent in 2001. MSI believe that this increase is attributable to an increase in the general population, as well as a rise in the number of elderly people residing in the UK.

· MSI believe that expenditure on hospital supplies by the independent sector has also increased during the review period, totalling some £456.6 million (€735.1 billion) in 2001. Growth has been stimulated by the poor performance of the NHS, resulting in numerous people opting for independent healthcare. Furthermore, growth in expenditure has been stimulated by the Concordat between the private and public healthcare sectors, with NHS hospitals carrying out many procedures using the facilities of private hospitals.

· During the forecast period, total UK hospitals' expenditure on hospital supplies is forecast to rise by 39 percent in real terms. Growth in the public sector will be a result of continuing increases in the population, government policies generating new investment, and increased patient throughput. Within the independent hospitals sector, MSI believe that growth will be stimulated by continuing concerns over the performance of the NHS, with PMI being an appealing healthcare option.
