MSI believe that the UK contract cleaning market has grown substantially during the late 1990s, with the value of the market increasing by 16 percent to £4.26 million (euro6.05 billion) between 1995 and 1998. It is believed that the UK contract cleaning market increased by a further 7 percent in real terms during 1999.
Private sector cleaning companies are projected to represent 62 percent of the total value of the UK contract cleaning market in 1999. Moreover, private cleaning contractors are successful in winning more contracts in terms of numbers, accounting for 59 percent of the total number of contracts won in 1998.
Between 1995 and 1999 the UK market for specialised cleaning has grown in value terms as a proportion of the total market for contract cleaning. MSI estimate that in 1995 specialised cleaning represented 22 percent of the total UK market for contract cleaning services, whilst in 1999 it is projected that specialised cleaning will account for 31 percent of the total UK market.

The trend for end user sectors to outsource further services is expected to continue. Consequently, contract cleaning companies will increasingly offer a wider range of services to satisfy demand.
The contract cleaning industry in the UK is highly fragmented with few barriers to entry. The majority of contract cleaning businesses are small. Indeed, businesses with a turnover of less than £250 000 (euro355 000) accounted for nearly 80 percent of the total number of UK industrial cleaning businesses in 1998.
