EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

Between 1993 and 1996 the market for UK consulting engineers increased substantially from £1.95 billion to £2.53 billion. A further increase of 8 percent in real terms is estimated to have occurred in 1997. The increase in UK consulting engineers' workload was mainly attributable to work undertaken in international markets, although certain sectors of the domestic market improved due to a number of factors, such as the stronger economy.

Fees rendered by UK consulting engineers in international markets increased significantly during the review period reflecting the stronger efforts made by UK consulting engineers to win international contracts. The Far East has been a particular focus of activity with significant investments being made due to the transfer of ownership of Hong Kong. Africa and the EU were other growth regions during the review period.

In the UK and international markets, the roads, bridges, railways and canals sector has rendered the largest proportion of fees for consulting engineers. The reduction in public expenditure in this sector in the UK has partly been offset by PFI projects. The commercial & domestic building sector has also made a significant contribution to UK consulting engineers' workloads.

The principal factors affecting the demand for UK consulting engineers during the review period included:

- UK and international economic factors
- levels of public expenditure
- the introduction of PFI and privately financed projects in the UK and internationally
- privatisation activity
- national and EU legislation

In addition, the introduction of National Lottery funding for construction projects and projects associated with the millennium have created further demand for consulting engineering services.

MSI believe that between 1998 and 2000 the market for UK consulting engineers will increase significantly after which time it is expected to decrease marginally. The roads, bridges, railways and canals, commercial and domestic building and environment sectors are all expected to be the major areas of growth during the five year forecast period.

The level of competition in the market for UK consulting engineers remains intense. It is estimated that the five leading UK consultancies accounted for some 39 percent of total fees rendered during 1996, whilst the 15 leading companies accounted for 71 percent of the market value during the same year. Many consultancies are now forming consortia to undertake large scale projects and are offering multi-disciplinary services.
