KEY FINDINGS

· MSI estimate that the UK market for tool hire increased by some 24 percent between 1997 and 2001 to reach a value of £950.0 million (€1 529.5 million). The value of the market has increased steadily throughout the review period, reflecting the buoyancy of the UK construction industry.

· The largest proportion of the UK tool hire market has continued to be represented by the power tools hire sector. Indeed, this sector represented some 44 percent of the value of the market for tool hire in 2001.

· The value of building and decorating equipment has increased in terms of proportional importance during the review period, to account for 25 percent of the UK market for tool hire in 2001.

· The range of customers that tool hire companies serve continues to go through a period of transition. While the traditional customer base of contractors remains strong, there continues to be a greater number of private individual end users, such as DIY enthusiasts who have been encouraged to hire tools due to the influence of DIY, home improvement and gardening programmes.

· There are a number of factors that affect the demand for tool hire in the UK. These include:

· MSI believe that the range of products being offered by UK tool hire companies is becoming wider as well as better quality. Tool hire companies have been forced to compete with a range of imported power tools that are being sold on the retail market at very low prices. As a result, increased expansion into other sectors of the market has occurred, with the mini equipment and small petrol/diesel unit sectors benefiting from expanding product ranges and a demand for higher quality products.

· MSI believe that there are a number of factors critical to the success of a company operating in the UK market for tool hire include the following:
