EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

MSI believe that the development and utilisation of ITS applications and technologies has increased substantially over the past ten years due largely to advances in electronic and communication technologies. In the same period, applications in road transport technologies have accelerated rapidly and are expected to continue to do so as technologies continue to develop to satisfy the demands and expectations of motorists.

Between 1996 and 2000 the market for RDS in the UK has grown significantly. Also, over the same period there has been the development of the GSM network where there have been a number of new services emerging, the most notable including:

· digital radio broadcasting
· two-way communication by satellite

The market for traffic management equipment is expected to increase significantly between 2000 and 2010. MSI believe that this increase will be largely attributable to increased investment over this period by the UK government to relieve congestion on the UK road network.

MSI believe that there are a number of factors that are expected to further stimulate demand for ITS applications in the UK, the most notable including :

· growth in the mobile communications sector
· technological developments
· economic growth
· social trends
· implementation by public transport operators
· improved efficiency of motor vehicles
· investment in the transport infrastructure
· implementation by the automotive industry

The perception of the general public towards ITS is a key component to the commercial success of ITS technology. Indeed, to guarantee the distribution of a technology, the relationship between the service offered and product price is very important. This implies that, although important, technologically advanced products and innovation alone may not be key market drivers.

The compatibility of equipment and the standardisation of data transmission is another significant factor concerning the economic viability of ITS products. At the time of writing, significant efforts were being made on a national and European scale regarding standardisation to enlarge the market for ITS technologies. MSI believe if standardisation is not achieved it could result in the loss of market shares for the European industry and a delay in the deployment of ITS applications.

Due to an increasing number of automotive manufacturers planning to fit ITS equipment into new vehicles, MSI believe a key route to the market for manufacturers of ITS products is through the automotive industry. Indeed, by working closely with the automotive industry, manufacturers of ITS products will be able to provide solutions for vehicles and will subsequently have a positive effect on sales of their products.

The largest ITS investment is forecast to be on road transport applications. Indeed, such is the potential demand for traveller information and guidance systems that it will drive the entire ITS market. Moreover, MSI believe that other areas of increased demand include advanced vehicle control systems, where demand for collision avoidance and automated intelligent cruise control equipment is expected to increase.

MSI believe that in-car navigational systems are the devices that will guide all future road users, even on the minor road networks and across international barriers. Indeed, falling prices and an increase in practicality mean that such systems will soon be as universally accepted as mobile phones have become.

MSI forecast that demand for fleet management systems is expected to increase further. Fleet management systems cover public transport, taxis and commercial vehicles and have significant potential for rationalising personal and freight movement.
