MSI believe that the total weight of goods lifted using temperature controlled road haulage, which is a measure of the weight of the goods handled, expressed in tonnes, in 2000 increased by 3 percent in 2000 to reach 137.1 million tonnes. Indeed, MSI estimate that the weight of temperature controlled goods lifted in the UK has increased by 6 percent between 1997 and 2000, with the highest rates of increase occurring in 1998 and 2000. Furthermore, MSI project that the total weight of temperature controlled goods lifted will increase by 5 percent in 2001 to reach a total of 144.1 million tonnes.
MSI estimate that total goods moved by temperature controlled haulage, which is the weight of the load multiplied by the distance it is carried, has increased throughout the review period. Indeed, total goods moved are believed to have increased by 4 percent in 2000 to reach 19.1 billion tonne kilometres. Furthermore, MSI project that a further increase of 5 percent will occur in 2001.
MSI have identified a number of factors which affect the UK market for temperature controlled road haulage. These include:
MSI estimate that the largest proportion of the goods lifted using temperature controlled haulage in the UK in the latter years of the review period was accounted for by chilled foods and beverages. Indeed, MSI project that chilled food and beverages will account for 49 percent of goods lifted using temperature controlled road haulage in the UK in 2001. Frozen foods are projected to account for a further 46 percent of goods lifted, whilst pharmaceuticals lifted during the year are expected to account for 2 percent of the total. The remaining 3 percent is projected to be accounted for by plants, flowers and other goods.
Chilled foods and beverages are expected to account for 49 percent of goods moved in the UK using temperature controlled road haulage in 2001, whilst frozen foods will account for 46 percent. The remaining 5 percent of goods moved is expected to be accounted for by pharmaceuticals and plants, flowers and other goods.
MSI forecast that the total weight of goods lifted using temperature controlled road haulage will increase by 17 percent between 2002 and 2006 to reach 174.8 million tonnes in 2006. The weight of goods lifted is expected to increase in all sectors, with the highest rates of growth expected to occur in the pharmaceuticals sector, which will increase by 32 percent during the forecast period. The weight of plants, flowers and other goods carried is also expected to exhibit strong growth, increasing by 26 percent during the period. By contrast, the weight of frozen foods lifted is forecast to increase by 15 percent between 2002 and 2006, whilst the weight of chilled foods and beverages is forecast to increase by 18 percent.
The total amount of goods moved in the UK using temperature controlled road haulage is expected to increase by 15 percent between 2002 and 2006 to reach 24.10 billion tonne kilometres, with peak growth of 5 percent occurring in 2006. The highest rate of growth is forecast to occur in the pharmaceutical sector, which is expected to increase by 31 percent during the five year period. MSI expect the chilled food and beverages sector to increase by 21 percent during the forecast period, whilst the frozen food sector is forecast to increase by just 8 percent. Plants, flowers and other goods are forecast to increase by 10 percent during the forecast period.
A number of factors are believed are critical to the success of companies operating in the UK market for temperature controlled road haulage. These include:
MSI believe that a process of consolidation among the larger companies is making it more difficult for new companies to enter the temperature controlled haulage market. In the late 1980s and early 1990s it was common for 15 or 20 companies to tender for contracts with retail chains and food manufacturers. However, trade sources report that during the latter half of the review period it has become unusual for more than three or four companies to be considered. Moreover, most clients will only consider working with companies with an extensive proven track record of handling comparable distribution requirements.
