DEFINITIONS

For the purposes of this report express delivery is defined as a service featuring, in addition to greater speed and reliability in the collection, distribution and delivery of items, all or some of the following supplementary facilities:

* guarantee of delivery by a fixed date

* collection from point of origin

* personal delivery to the addressee

* possibility of changing the destination and addressee in transit

* confirmation to sender of receipt of the item dispatched

* monitoring and tracking of items dispatched

* personalised service for customers

The average weight of items carried by express delivery companies is fairly low, due to the large number of small documents companies are required to transport. MSI believe that the maximum weight for an express delivery parcel is 31.5kg and that any consignment in excess of this weight is categorised as being either a freight parcel or a pallet.

Due to the move towards globalisation of the business world, the use of integrators has increased. These are major international carriers, which operate on a global scale and handle long-distance movements with their own fleet of dedicated freighter aircraft.

For the purposes of this report, MSI have based the market size on the value of parcels transported and the value generated from the delivery of consignments. The German and UK express delivery service markets are also estimated in terms of the volume of parcels transported. It is important to note that the overall home delivery market is not included in this report. Home deliveries included in the market size, are those made by express delivery operators only. Moreover, deliveries by rapid courier services, usually involving deliveries at very short notice over relatively small distances, have also been excluded.

It should also be noted that the terms east and west Germany refer to the present counterparts of the former East Germany and West Germany. Germany consists of 16 Federal States, singularly known as Land, or collectively as L„nder, 11 of which are in west Germany and 5 in east Germany. The term "new L„nder" is also used to refer to the former East Germany.
