DEFINITIONS

This report analyses the market for courier services in the UK. The UK market for courier services has been segmented by domestic and international courier services. Furthermore, the report focuses on the structure of the courier services industry together with factors affecting the demand for courier services and factors which are critical to the success of courier service providers in the UK.

For the purposes of this report the following definitions apply:

Courier services refers to the delivery of a package, with no lower or upper limit of weight, to a customer either during the same day that the collection was made or by a specified time during the next working day. Courier services includes the delivery of packages on an intra-city, regional, national or international basis. Courier services used to be defined as a strictly same day service. However, trade sources report that the boundary between courier and express delivery services has become less certain. As such, the market size for courier services in the UK encompasses more than same day deliveries. It does, therefore, include an element of what would have been classified previously by MSI as express delivery.

National deliveries refers to the delivery of packages throughout the UK with national and regionally based companies undertaking such deliveries. Regional deliveries refers to the delivery of packages within the same region as the pick-up. Intra-city deliveries refers to the delivery of packages to addresses within the same city as the sender.

Ad-hoc refers to customers who occasionally use a courier service. Customers are, therefore, not bound into a contract with the courier services company and their custom is not guaranteed as they use the service as and when it is required.

For the purposes of this report, MSI have defined the market size on the value generated from the delivery of these consignments. It is important to note that the total home delivery market and any delivery services other than same day and guaranteed timed next day deliveries are not included in the market size. Home deliveries included in the market size are those made by courier services companies during the same day or guaranteed timed next day to which the delivery booking was made.

As a consequence of the service provided by courier services companies, customers are required to pay a higher price for this delivery service than customers would do for basic and other guaranteed delivery services.

All values are quoted at current prices unless otherwise specified and exclude VAT. MSI has a policy of rounding numbers from five up to the next significant figure, including financial information.
