The volume of express delivery packages sent in the UK during 1998 increased by 3 percent to reach a total of 700 million packages, reflecting increases in both the domestic and international markets. In value terms, the market reached 2.3 billion (ECU3.3 billion), a 4 percent increase on the value of the market in 1997.
The internal express delivery market increased by 2 percent in terms of volume during 1998 to reach 660 million packages. Of this total, some 337 million packages, or 51 percent of the market, was accounted for by next day deliveries. Demand for two to three day services is estimated to have declined by 7 percent during 1998. Non-guaranteed services, which require only proof-of-delivery, increased by 7 percent during 1998, mainly due to increased growth within the home shopping sector. In terms of value, the total internal market is estimated to have increased by just under 1 percent to reach 1.6 billion (ECU2.3 billion).
MSI estimate that the international volume market reached 39.9 million packages in 1998, an 18 percent increase on the previous year. The value market also increased, reaching 762 million (ECU1.1 billion). In terms of destination, by far the largest proportion of consignments went to other European countries. Indeed, the value market for parcels sent within Europe has increased by 54 percent since 1994, and reached 539 million (ECU776 million) in 1998.
MSI have identified a number of factors which have a significant effect on the demand for express delivery services in the UK. These include:
MSI have identified the following factors as being critical to the continued success of express delivery service providers:
Concentration in the express delivery industry is particularly high within the domestic market, and the leading three companies account for almost half of the total value of the market. However, market niches such as home shopping and specialised handling for particular industries have enabled smaller UK express delivery companies to remain profitable.
Market shares of the leading four international suppliers were only slightly eroded by the activities of other UK express delivery companies during 1998. However, MSI believe that the leading international express carriers will be forced to invest more heavily in marketing initiatives in the future in order to maintain their leading positions as domestic carriers expand their international operations independently, through consortia or acquisitions.
