MSI project that the value of the UK market will increase by 3 percent to reach £2.6 billion (4.3 billion) in 2001. During the same year, the volume of packages which are distributed by express delivery companies is expected to increase by 4 percent to 788 million packages. The more significant growth in volume compared with value is due to continued price competition and higher value deliveries within the international sector of the market.
It is projected that the market for domestic express delivery services will continue to account for the largest proportion of the total market in 2001. Indeed, it is projected that the market will grow by 4 percent in volume terms during 2001 to reach 728 million packages. Within this sector of the express delivery market, next day delivery services continue to be the most significant time specific type of delivery, projected to account for 55 percent of the total volume and 64 percent of the total value markets.
Demand for express delivery services can be affected by a number of factors. MSI have identified the following: · the domestic economy · international economic conditions · business confidence · distribution and production techniques · e-commerce · home shopping · electronic documentation
MSI believe that the average revenue per parcel has continued to decline for internal deliveries throughout the review period. Furthermore, it is projected that the revenue per parcel in the UK market for internal express delivery services will decline by 3 percent in 2001, largely due to continued price competition between express delivery companies.
MSI believe that the international delivery sector of the market continued to increase at a more significant rate, compared with the domestic sector during the review period. Indeed, it is projected that the volume of the UK market for international express delivery services will grow by 10 percent to 60.3 million packages in 2001. Moreover, it is projected that the value of the international express delivery market will increase by 8 percent to £1.0 billion (1.7 billion) during the same year.
There are a number of factors which have continued to be critical to the success of companies operating in the UK express delivery market. MSI have identified the following factors: · reliability · price · innovation · investment · level of service · communication with customers · range of services · training
MSI believe that the total market for express delivery services in the UK will continue to increase in both volume and value terms between 2002 and 2006. However, growth is expected to be more significant within the international sector of the market as more companies offer this type of service in response to customer demand. Price pressures within both the internal and international markets are likely to continue to affect companies operating in the UK express delivery industry as a result of high levels of competition within the market.
