KEY FINDINGS

This report examines the builders’ merchants industry in the UK between 1998 and 2007. The market size refers to the value of sales at retail selling prices to contractors and private end users by builders’ merchants on the UK territory. The market has been segmented into the following areas:
• type of sector:
–lightside
–heavyside
–tool & tool hire
• type of work:
–repair, maintenance and improvement
–new build
• type of customer:
–larger contractors are large building and civil engineering contracting companies, which carry out large scale construction projects
–small to medium contractors, which carry out relatively small building projects, typically small housing and commercial projects
–private individuals, typically undertaking DIY and home improvement work, and small building projects
Lightside materials are classed as all products and materials for the innershell of the building. These materials and products include:
- decorating materials, including paints, wall coverings, artex, coving and fillers
- adhesives and sealants
- architectural ironmongery and hardware, including door and window furniture and fixings
plumbing and heating, including boilers, radiators, room heaters, water heaters, gas and electric space heater, gas fires, flue systems,
- kitchens and bathrooms, including kitchen appliances, kitchen furniture, sinks, baths, showers, accessories, brassware, sanitaryware and
- tools, including electrical and hand tools
- electrical fittings and fixings, including switches, sockets, nails, bolts and screws
Heavyside materials are classed as all materials and products used for the outside fabric of the building. These materials and products include:
- bricks, blocks and concrete, including bricks, blocks, pre-cast concrete, lintels, paving and slabs
- drainage, including concrete, clay and plastic drainage including culverts, manhole rings, pipes, gullies, ducting and drainage accessories
- roofing and insulation, including roofing materials, wall and roof insulation
- cement and plaster, including cement, mortar, lime, ready mixed concrete, plaster and plaster board
- aggregates, including sand, gravel and pebbles
- timber and forest products, including blockboard, hardboard, plywood, fencing, sheds, doors and windows and frames
The tool hire sector is classed as:
- power tools, including equipment such as disc cutters, angle grinders, electric sanders, cordless nail guns, multifunction fixing tools
- building and decorating equipment, including products such as aluminium towers, ladders and multi purpose boards
- small diesel/petrol units, including equipment such as generators, air compressors and rotovators
- mini equipment, including products such as mini diggers, concrete mixers, pallet trucks and dump trucks
