KEY FINDINGS

The UK market for prefabricated modular and portable buildings has continued to increase during the review period. In 2002 the market is expected to increase by a further 7 percent to reach £1 475.4 million (€2 375.4 million).
Portable buildings have accounted for the largest proportion of the market throughout the review period and are projected to continue to account for the largest proportion of the market in 2002. However, the value of the portable buildings sector has grown only marginally during the review period. In contrast, demand for modular buildings has increased substantially. Therefore, the proportional importance of modular buildings has also increased, and in 2002 modular buildings are projected to represent 30 percent of the market.
Timber framed and steel framed buildings have remained the most popular choice for prefabricated building between 1998 and 2002. However, demand for materials such as concrete and plastic pultrusions has continued to increase.
The private sector has represented the largest proportion of the UK market for prefabricated modular and portable buildings. However, the proportional importance of the private sector has decreased between 1998 and 2001. Moreover, this trend is expected to continue in 2002. MSI project that the private sector will account for 58 percent of the total UK market for prefabricated modular and portable buildings in 2002.
Education, healthcare and construction are projected to account for the largest proportions of the market in 2002. Indeed, these end user sectors will account for 16 percent, 16 percent and 14 percent of the market respectively. However, the housing sector is projected to demonstrate the largest increase in market value of 21 percent in 2002.
MSI have identified a number of factors which affect demand in the UK market for prefabricated modular and portable buildings. These include:
UK economy
construction trends
UK housing market
construction labour shortages
regulations
investment
climate change
immigration trends
employment
geographical trends
price
substitute products
MSI forecast that the UK market for prefabricated modular and portable buildings will continue to increase between 2003 and 2007. Indeed, the market is expected to increase by 46 percent during this period.
Modular buildings are expected to account for the largest proportion of the market by the end of the forecast period. By 2007 modular buildings are forecast to account for 53 percent of the market.
Timber and steel framed buildings will continue to account for the largest proportions of the market during the forecast period. Steel framed buildings are expected to gain proportional importance over timber framed buildings by the end of the forecast period.
The public sector is expected to grow to account for the largest proportion of the market by 2007. MSI forecast that the public sector will represent 51 percent of the market in 2007.
Education, healthcare and construction will continue to account for the largest proportions of the market between 2003 and 2007. However, prison establishments, military organisations and housing will grow to account for the most significant proportions of the market. By 2007 these end user sectors are forecast to account for 8 percent, 7 percent and 5 percent of the market respectively.
MSI has identified a number of factors critical to the success of companies supplying the UK market for prefabricated modular and portable buildings. These include:
accreditation and certification
design
innovation
working relationships
economies of scale and volume manufacturing
price, quality and availability
sales & marketing
During the review period, the UK prefabricated modular and portable buildings industry has become increasingly concentrated with larger companies acquiring smaller companies in order to gain competitive advantage.
