1 The UK Market For Specialist Foundations, By Technique,
1994-2003
MSI believe that the UK market for specialist foundations
increased by 8 percent to ?335 million (ECU476 million) in 1998. The market fluctuated in value terms between 1994 and 1998. The
piling sector accounted for the most significant proportion of
the total market for specialist foundations in 1998. Ground improvement work is estimated to have represented 24 percent of the
total market in 1998, with underpinning representing the
remaining 21 percent.
A number of factors have been identified which affect demand for specialist foundations. These factors include:
- the level of construction activity
- the UK economy
- the geographical location of construction activity
- construction development on contaminated land
- the size and load bearing capacity of the structure
The UK market for piling is estimated to have increased by 13 percent
in 1998. MSI believe that bored piling methods accounted for 62 percent
of the piling market in 1998. Bored piling methods are believed
to have lost market share in recent years as the use of driven piling methods has increased. In 1998 driven piling methods are estimated to have represented 22 percent of the market in value terms
with embedded retaining walls representing the remaining 16 percent.
UK production of earth boring machinery and pile driving
equipment declined by 1 percent in 1998. The decline in production is believed to have reflected the fall in export levels during the year. MSI believe that this was as a result of the economic slow down in Asia, with demand in Asia having accounted for a significant proportion of UK exports of earth boring equipment
and pile driving equipment in 1997. However, an increase in
demand for earth boring machinery and pile driving equipment in North America compensated to a degree for the fall in demand from Asia.
The UK market for ground improvement is estimated to have
increased by 5 percent in 1998. The rise in UK construction output affected the market for ground improvement. In particular, the increase in construction on brownfield and contaminated sites stimulated demand for ground improvement work. As the
availability of 'good' ground declines the incidence of construction on brownfield and contaminated sites is expected to continue increasing.
MSI believe that demand for underpinning declined significantly
in value terms during the first half of the 1990s. Demand for underpinning increased by 5 percent in 1996, with continued growth in
1997 and 1998 albeit at a slower rate.
The UK market for specialist foundations is forecast to continue increasing between 1999 and 2003. The continued growth of the market is expected to reflect the forecast growth in the UK construction market during the corresponding period. MSI believe that all sectors of the specialist foundations market will
increase during the forecast period.
MSI have identified a number of factors that are critical for specialist foundation contractors to secure, maintain and expand their businesses. These factors include:
- the capability to meet specification and design
standards
- price competitiveness
- research and development
- reputation
- quality
- environmental awareness
The UK specialist foundation industry is believed to be characterised by a high degree of overcapacity. The competitive nature of the industry intensified during the mid-1990s due to
the effect of the UK economic recession on the construction industry, which led to a fall in workload. However, MSI believe that although workload diminished the number of companies operating in the industry did not
