EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

MSI believe that the value of commercial and industrial construction output throughout Great Britain grew steadily throughout the review period, albeit at a slower rate of 4 percent during 2000. Furthermore, the total value of commercial and industrial building, including both new and repair and maintenance work, is believed to have increased to £35.0 billion (€55.7 billion) in 2000 compared with £27.1 billion (€40.4 billion) during 1997.

The value of new construction work was believed to have reached a total of £21.0 billion (€33.4 billion) in 2000, representing 60 percent of the total value of commercial and industrial building construction output. MSI believe that within the private sector, the value of commercial and industrial building output increased by a significant 32 percent during the review period to reach a total of £25.7 billion (€40.9 billion) during 2000. Public sector construction output also increased, albeit at a lesser rate of 22 percent. Growth within the public sector was principally due to the increasing popularity of PFI projects.
