EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

The market for alternative energy in the UK increased throughout the review period in terms of both capacity and electricity generated. Indeed, it is estimated that alternative energy capacity increased to 7 071.8 MWe in 2000, an increase of 13 percent compared with 1999.

CHP represented the largest proportion of alternative energy capacity during the review period, accounting for an estimated 66 percent in 2000. Of the renewable energy sources, hydroelectric power accounted for the largest capacity. In 2000 some 1 479.1MWe of hydroelectric power capacity was available. Furthermore, it has a number of advantages over most other sources of alternative energy, the most significant of which is its maturity.

Bioenergy has the potential to be the most important alternative energy in the UK, partly because it can be moved and stored and may also be commercially processed into a range of fuel products. However, awareness of its potential needs to be increased to maximise its potential.

MSI believe that the following are major factors affecting the demand for alternative energy in the UK:

The market for alternative energy is driven by the following factors:

The market for alternative energy is expected to continue to increase during the forecast period. Indeed, MSI forecast that the capacity of alternative energy sources will increase by 16 percent between 2001 and 2005.However, the rate of growth in capacity is expected to slow compared with the review period.

The use of all of the renewable energies are expected to increase during the forecast period. However, the rate of growth will vary as a result of developments in each of the technologies. During the forecast period offshore wind energy production is expected to increase significantly. Furthermore, wave and tidal energy technologies are expected to make substantial developments.

MSI believe that there are opportunities available for suppliers to the alternative energy market in the following areas:
