About MSI reports

An MSI Landscape report is a new concept - a short format report laid out as a Marketing Presentation. In hardcopy form, the report presents a pair of pages that discuss each report aspect or question shown in the Table of Contents. Thus the question Who are the Leading Hotel Groups in the UK? is supported by a graphic (in this case a pie chart showing market share of the leading chains) and by a table (in this case, the number of bedrooms and the number of hotels of 13 named groups, plus an entry covering the rest of the industry). The facing page states those Facts that you, as the person undertaking the presentation, would be expected to know - in this instance, five paragraphs covering the recent activities of the market leaders and pertinent bullet points to enable you to create a hard-hitting presentation.

The MSI Landscape range has proved to be extremely popular, both in the hardcopy format and in the additional PowerPoint electronic version - packaged ready for you to adapt to your needs or use immediately as a framework for presenting further analysis. MSI Landscapes are also purchased as an entry level report into a particular sector by marketing professionals, financial analysts, market researchers and business information professionals.

This report analyses investment by the 12 regional electricity distribution and supply companies in the UK, Scottish Power and Scottish and Southern Energy in Scotland and Northern Ireland Electricity. The 12 Regional Electricity Companies (REC’s) in England and Wales, also known as Public Electricity Supply Companies (PEC’s), are the direct successors to the previous Area Boards. It also examines the electricity supply companies’ capital expenditure and financial performance.

At the time of writing, the Electricity Pool of England and Wales was at the centre of the trading arrangements in the wholesale electricity market. The Pool provides a mechanism for setting a single wholesale price. It is compulsory for licensed generators to sell the vast majority of their electricity output through the Pool and for licensed suppliers to purchase their supplies from the Pool to meet the demand from their customers.

In contrast, the vertically integrated structure of the Scottish companies covering generation, transmission, distribution and supply means that Scotland does not have a wholesale electricity marker like the Pool in England and Wales. At the time of writing, the trading arrangements consisted of two separate but interconnected trading areas which are also interconnected with the England and Wales market. Similarly, at the time of writing there was no electricity pool in the restructured industry in Northern Ireland. The power production companies are all required to sell their electricity to the power procurement business of Northern Ireland Electricity, which then sells directly to licensed suppliers, including Northern Ireland Electricity’s own supply business.

New Electricity Trading Arrangements (NETA) - Under the NETA the electricity pool will be replaced by trading arrangements much more like those in other community markets. Based on bilateral trading between generators, suppliers, traders and customers, the market will be contract driven. The new arrangements will include

A unit of electricity is the approximate quantity of electrical energy absorbed by a one-bar electric fire during one hour. A unit is equal to 1 kilowatt hour.

Voltage

kV (kilovolt) is a thousand volts

Power

kW (kilowatt) is a thousand watts
MW (megawatt) is a million watts or a thousand kilowatts
GW (gigawatt) is a thousand megawatts or a million kilowatts
TW (terawatt) is a million megawatts or a thousand million kilowatts

Energy MWh (megawatt hour) is one hour’s electricity production or consumption at a constant rate of 1 MW GWh (gigawatt hour) is one hour’s electricity production or consumption at a constant rate of 1 GW TWh (terawatt hour) is one hour’s electricity production or consumption at a constant rate of 1 TW

All values are quoted at current prices unless otherwise specified.

Due to the fact that the year end for the electricity distribution and supply companies is March and therefore the majority of the business year is in the year previous to the year end, euro rates for the year prior to the stated year end have been applied.

MSI has a policy of rounding numbers from five up to the next significant. Consequently, financial data may differ from sources documents.
