EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

Total capital investment in sewage disposal services by the water and sewerage companies in England and Wales decreased in the three years to March 2002. In the year to March 2002, the water and sewerage companies in England and Wales invested some £1.52 billion (€2.42 billion) in sewage disposal. Of this total, some 57 percent was accounted for by investment in sewage treatment. A further 32 percent was invested in the sewerage network and the remaining 11 percent in general sewage assets.
The Scottish water industry invested some £273.6 million (€435.0 million), an increase of 13 percent compared with the previous year. A significant increase of 13 percent in capital investment was made by Northern Ireland Water Service during the same period. Indeed, investment levels rose by 45 percent in 2002 to £42.0 million (€66.8 million).
Total capital investment by the water and sewerage companies in England and Wales will increase during the initial and latter stages of the forecast period. However, MSI forecast a decrease in investment in 2005 due to the completion of major projects and the uncertainty before new levels of expenditure are agreed. MSI forecast that investment levels by the Scottish water industry will fluctuate during the forecast period. However, investment levels will continue to increase by Northern Ireland Water Service during this period. Indeed, a high level of capital investment will be required to meet higher standards of drinking water quality and to deliver environmental improvements.
