EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

1                Key Findings
MSI believe that the volume of solid controlled waste arising from the commercial, construction & demolition, domestic and industrial sectors in the UK grew by 1% between 2000 and 2003 to reach a total volume of 178 million tonnes. MSI project that the total volume of solid controlled waste arising from the sector will rise marginally in 2004.
MSI believe that the growth in the volume of solid controlled waste arising between 2000 and 2004 is largely due to the rise in disposable income of consumer which has consequently led to an increase in the volume of waste arising, mainly attributable to the domestic sector. Moreover, the continuing strength of the UK economy, which has led to an increase in business start-ups, has contributed to the rise in the amount of waste generated from the commercial sector.
MSI forecast that the volume of waste arisings in the UK will decrease by 1% between 2005 and 2009, as illustrated in the following diagram.
