EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

The UK market for contaminated land assessment and remediation is estimated to have increased by 20 percent in value terms between 1996 and 1999. Further growth of 11 percent is projected for 2000, leading to a total market value of £768 million (€1 290 million). This reflects changes in legislation coupled with the buoyancy of the UK construction industry during the year.

Remediation work is projected to account for 58 percent of the total contaminated land assessment and remediation market in value terms, with the assessment market accounting for the remaining 42 percent. The proportional importance of the assessment market has increased from some 37 percent in 1996 at the expense of the remediation sector.

The value of the contaminated land assessment market is believed to have increased by some 29 percent between 1996 and 1999 to reach a value of £277 million (€446 million). Indeed, with the introduction of the contaminated land regime in 2000 the assessment market is expected to increase by a further 17 percent.

The largest proportion of the contaminated land remediation market was represented by excavation and disposal methods throughout the review period. However, MSI believe that the proportional importance of this remediation technique is decreasing to account for some 76 percent of the remediation market in 2000, compared with 80 percent in 1996. Despite this, demand for excavation and disposal is estimated to have increased by 10 percent in value terms between 1996 and 1999, with a further increase of 4 percent expected to occur during 2000.

Factors affecting the demand for contaminated land treatment in the UK include the following:

· regeneration schemes
· impact of new legislation
· direct operational costs
· decreasing number of sites suitable for development
· changing attitudes towards the environment

The market for contaminated land assessment and remediation is expected to increase by 30 percent in value terms between 2001 and 2005. Despite an expected slowdown in UK construction activity MSI believe that the contaminated land regime will be largely responsible for future growth in the total market, especially in terms of assessment work.

The UK market for contaminated land assessment is expected to increase by some 48 percent between 2001 and 2005. Market growth is expected to peak in 2001 before growth short to decrease.

The UK market for contaminated land remediation is forecast to increase by 15 percent between 2001 and 2005. Whilst there are expected to be substantial opportunities for contaminated land remediation during the forecast period, MSI believe that growth in the market will be constrained due to the high costs involved.
