EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

1. The UK market for rail safety equipment and services has fluctuated during the review period. This has largely been attributable to uncertainty in the industry regarding changes to industry structure. However, the market has witnessed continued growth in value terms during the latter stages of the review period. Indeed, an estimated increase of 9 percent occurred in 2001 to reach a value of £5.98 billion (€9.63 billion).
2. In 2001 rail safety equipment and services represented the largest proportion of the market, accounting for 76 percent of the total market value, which equated to a value of £4.53 billion (€7.29 billion). Rail safety maintenance services accounted for the remaining 24 percent of the market value.
