EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

MSI project that total UK port traffic will increase by 3 percent during 1996 to a level of some 564 million tonnes. MSI believe that in 1996 the volume of trade in each of the main traffic sectors will increase considerably. The major growth sectors are projected to include the liquid bulk market, which is projected to increase to 315 million tonnes, and the container & roll-on/roll-off sector where trade volumes will expand to 118 million tonnes.

The seven leading ports in the UK accounted for 54 percent of total trade handled in 1995. London remained the leading UK port, accounting for 9 percent of trade during the year, handling 51 million tonnes of traffic. Forth and Grimsby & Immingham were of equal importance as the second largest ports in terms of volume of trade handled, each dealing with 47 million tonnes during 1995.

Privatisation clearly stimulated capital expenditure in the UK ports industry. Although relatively few ports have been privatised, the issue has focused the industry's attention on the earnings potential of their facilities. Moreover the ports which have relinquished their trust status have been quick to capitalise on developing their assets. Indeed asset management has become a key issue in the industry and has boosted investment in many ports.

MSI believe that total capital expenditure by the industry will reach some £760 million during 1996.

MSI forecast that the strong growth in capital expenditure by the UK port industry will be maintained in 1997 and 1998 in real value terms, reflecting the intense competition in the sector as well as the effects of privatisation.

The changes that have taken place within the UK ports market, coupled with the investment trends, have served to present substantial opportunities for suppliers to the UK commercial ports market.

The structure of the UK ports industry is complex mainly due to historical factors, in particular the 1991 Ports Act. There are in excess of 300 ports and harbours in the UK ranging in size from small river wharfs and fishing havens to major dock installations, such as London and Felixstowe.
