EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

The French market for active fire protection equipment is estimated to have increased by 20 percent in value terms between 1993 and 1997 to reach FF5.14 billion (ECU0.78 billion) at end user prices. The market has been mainly affected by the level of construction output combined with changing regulations in the French and European markets during the review period.

Fire detection systems and sprinklers both accounted for the largest proportion of the total market in 1997 with a share of 29 percent each. The fire detection systems sector has increased its share of the market during the review period as a result of a strong increase in the value market with a rise of 98 percent between 1993 and 1997. Portable extinguishers accounted for the third largest sector with an estimated 20 percent of the total market in 1997. The remainder of the market was accounted for by emergency lighting and alarms, fixed extinguishing systems and hose reels.

MSI forecast that the market for active fire protection will increase by 2 percent in real value terms during 1998. The market is expected to grow more significantly in the years thereafter mainly as a result of a recovery in the construction industry and further changes in the regulatory situation.

A number of factors are believed to be critical to the success of companies operating in the French market for active fire protection including:

- the company reputation
- highly trained and qualified employees
- compliance of products with French and European norms
- after sales and additional services
- product range
- research and development
- price
- geographical proximity

The distribution channels used in the market for active fire protection vary from one segment to another. Nevertheless, the various types of installers involved in the market include manufacturers or distributors which integrate installation, specialised installers, and major contractors such as construction, electrical, mechanical and process plant contractors.

The active fire protection industry is characterised by a combination of large, multi-sector companies supplying several sectors and smaller, dedicated manufacturers supplying to specific markets. Major changes have been reported in the industry with a number of French companies being taken over by international groups.
