EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

The UK market for passive fire protection was subdued during the early part of the 1990s but it is believed to have increased by 5 percent in nominal terms between 1995 and 1996 to reach a value of £515.7 million at manufacturers' selling prices.

Fire resisting architectural ironmongery accounted for some 28 percent of the value of passive fire protection products sold in the UK during 1996 compared with 25 percent in 1992. The second largest sector of the UK passive fire protection market is fire resisting doors which represented 26 percent of total value in 1996. The following sectors maintained their level of market share during the review period:

- partitions, screens & linings
- structural fire protection
- fire resisting glass
- intumescent seals

The proportion of the market accounted for by fire resisting cables declined marginally between 1992 and 1996 to less than 16 percent.

The market for passive fire protection in the UK is principally affected by:

- the level of construction output
- economic factors
- demand for substitute products
- the number of fires caused by malicious acts
- legislation
- changes in end user preferences

Demand for passive fire protection products in the UK is forecast to rise by 22 percent in real terms between 1997 and 2001. This is expected to reflect the forecast improvement in the UK economy and the positive effect that this is expected to have on the construction industry.

MSI have identified a number of factors that are critical to the success of suppliers to the UK passive fire industry. These factors are largely determined by the structures of the various industry sectors together with the level of growth within each market segment. However, a number of factors have been identified as being critical to most sectors:

- prices
- product performance
- availability of products and delivery times
- sales and marketing activity
- support services
- research and development
- targeting specifiers
- third party accreditation and testing
