EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

MSI project that the UK market for active fire protection increased by 8 percent in nominal terms in 1999 to a value of ?415.2 million (euro589.6 million) at end user prices. However, when considered in real terms the market has grown only marginally during much of the review period, reflecting the maturity of the market and the difficulties which have affected the manufacturing sector.

The level of construction output continues to be the most significant factor affecting UK demand for active fire protection. MSI project that total construction output during 1999 will increase by 2 percent to a value of ?63.5 billion (euro94.8 billion) despite reduced output during the first quarter of the year.

Throughout the review period, the largest proportion of the UK market for active fire protection systems has been accounted for by detection and alarm systems. MSI project that in 1999 this sector will increase in value by 7 percent to ?174.3 million (euro247.5 million) at end user prices, accounting for 42 percent of the total market value.

MSI forecast that the value of the UK active fire protection market will increase by 9 percent during 2000 to reach ?452.5 million (euro642.6 million). This increase is expected to result primarily from increased confidence in the manufacturing sector as the economic recovery continues. This increased confidence is forecast to result in a continuation of the growth in construction output seen in the latter half of 1999, particularly in the commercial sector. Furthermore, construction of leisure facilities, civic buildings and other millennium-related construction projects are also expected to increase demand for active fire protection during the early part of the forecast period. The majority of such projects are expected to be completed by 2003.

Critical success factors for manufacturers supplying the UK market include:

- compliance with relevant British and European standards

- gaining accreditation from a recognised approvals organisation

- obtaining third party certification of their products, installation and maintenance services

- securing control of effective distribution outlets

The distribution channels for active fire protection vary between the different product sectors. However, the following means of distribution are widely used throughout the active fire protection industry:

- direct sales to end users

- sales through electrical wholesalers and specialist retailers

- trade sales through independent and approved installers

- sales through major contractors, including construction, electrical, mechanical and process plant contractors

- sales to original equipment manufacturers

The UK active fire protection industry has been subject to a period of increased consolidation during the review period, with the largest suppliers to the market operating globally through an increasing number of subsidiaries. The major suppliers of active fire protection equipment, through their subsidiaries, in 1999 are:

- Tyco Holdings (UK)

- Williams

These large multi-faceted companies supply several sectors of the UK active fire protection market, whilst smaller specialist companies supply specific markets or niche markets.
