EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

The UK electronic security systems market is expected to increase by some 2 percent in real terms during 1999. MSI believe the intruder alarms sector accounted for the largest proportion of the UK market in 1999. However, the UK market for intruder alarms is projected to decrease by 1 percent during 1999.

MSI believe that the UK market for central monitoring station services increased by 40 percent between 1995 and 1998 and is projected to rise by a further 5 percent in real terms in 1999. MSI believe that this is largely attributable to the ACPO policy, introduced in 1995, which discourages police from responding to alarm systems unless they are connected to a monitoring centre.

Technological change across the access control and CCTV sectors has been a major contributory factor to an increase in demand from end users between 1995 and 1998. MSI project that the value of the access control and CCTV markets will increase by 5 percent and 2 percent respectively during 1999, with market value growth severely constrained by declining prices in some product sectors.

MSI forecast that the total market for electronic security systems will increase by 3 percent during 2000. MSI believe that technological developments and lower prices will continue to stimulate demand from end users.

The factors that are critical to the success of companies operating in the UK electronic security sector include:

* new product development * market research

* product quality

* adaptability

* diversification

MSI report that a high level of research and development has been undertaken by companies operating in the electronic security systems market. Indeed, technological change across security sectors such as CCTV and access control has resulted in the improvement of existing product ranges and to extend the life of existing products.

There has been a large amount of acquisition activity within the electronic security systems industry during the 1990s and the concentration of the industry has increased significantly. MSI believe that the principal reasons why companies have undertaken acquisitional activity include:

* to strengthen market position

* to improve service levels to customers

* extend product portfolio, particularly with the development of integrated security systems

* to compete in the global market place

* to achieve cost savings and economies of scale

* to achieve increased capital efficiency
