EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

The UK market for electronic security systems is believed to have grown continuously between 1994 and 1998. MSI project that the market will increase by 7 percent in real terms in 1998.

The intruder alarms sector has accounted for the largest proportion of the UK market for electronic security systems between 1994 and 1998. However, growth in the demand for intruder alarms has slowed due to the mature nature of the sector. MSI project that the intruder alarms sector will increase by 3 percent in real terms in 1998.

The introduction of the Association of Chief Police Officers' false alarms policy in 1995 has had significant implications for various sectors of the UK electronic security systems market, including the intruder alarms and central monitoring station service sectors. Indeed, MSI believe the policy has been a key factor contributing to the increase in the market for central monitoring station services in recent years. The central monitoring station services sector is projected to increase by 10 percent in real terms in 1998.

MSI believe that the UK market for access control systems increased by 54 percent between 1994 and 1997 and is projected to grow by 9 percent in real terms in 1998. Increased public acceptance of the use of access control has stimulated demand for the systems. Furthermore, the rate of technological advance has served to expand the market for access control.

The closed circuit television sector is believed to have increased by 59 percent between 1994 and 1997, with real growth of 17 percent expected to occur in 1998. MSI believe that the high profile of closed circuit television in the media is a factor which has stimulated demand in the market.

MSI have identified a number of factors which are believed to affect demand for electronic security equipment. These are:

- the crime rate, both actual and perceived
- construction activity
- economic activity
- regulatory influences
- preconditions on policies imposed by insurance companies
- demographic trends
- new product development

The level of competition in the UK electronic security industry has increased the importance of being competitively priced. Furthermore, it is important for suppliers to be aware of the strong purchasing power of some end users, such as in the retail sector, which can have a relatively high degree of influence on price.

A further factor which is believed to be critical to the success of companies operating in the electronic security market is to be accredited to one of the recognised bodies in the industry, such as the National Approval Council for Security Systems, to satisfy end users that they are providing high quality products and services. The importance of being accredited by regulatory bodies has also been influenced by the stipulation by many insurance companies that electronic security systems must consist of approved equipment and be installed by accredited installers.

It is believed that the UK electronic security systems industry is fragmented to a relatively high degree. A significant proportion of market share is attributable to medium and small sized independent companies. MSI believe that some companies are reporting higher levels of growth than the market growth rate reflecting the high level of acquisitional activity which has taken place in the UK electronic security systems industry.
