EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

                Key Findings
The value of the market for electronic security systems grew continuously throughout the review period. Indeed, between 2000 and 2003 there was an increase of 10% in the market value. MSI project that market reached £1.45 billion (€2.15 billion), an increase of 4% on the previous year.
MSI believe that the main factor behind the increase in the value of the market for electronic security systems during the review period was the increase in construction output. Indeed, the construction of new buildings has a strong impact as a significant proportion of new buildings are now fitted with electronic security equipment. MSI believe that the UK economy also had a significant impact on the market for electronic security during the review period.
The value of the UK market for intruder alarms reached £639 million (€952 million) in 2003. This was an increase of 2% compared to the previous year. The value of the market is projected to reach £656 million (€971 million) in 2004. ACPO policy has had an impact on the development and demand for intruder alarms in the UK.
The UK market for central monitoring station services has increased continuously during the review period. The value of the market rose by some 5% in 2003 to reach £292 million (€435 million). Moreover, MSI project that the value of the market will increase by a further 6% during 2004. Actual crime rates and the fear of crime have both had an effect on the demand for central monitoring station services during the review period. Indeed, there has been an additional need to invest in electronic security to protect property from crime and vandalism.
The UK market for CCTV systems increased by 17% between 2000 and 2003 to reach £246 million (€367 million). MSI project a further 5% increase in the market value in 2004. Trade sources report that government investment has had a significant positive impact on the CCTV market during the review period, especially the CCTV Initiative.
The access control equipment market decreased in value terms during 2000, but increased thereafter. Indeed, during 2003 the market reached £216 million (€322 million), showing a 4% increase compared to 2002. MSI project that the value of the access control market will increase by a further 3% in 2004 to reach £223 million (€330 million). MSI believe that police recorded crime rates and the findings of the British Crime Survey (BCS) have influenced the demand for access control equipment in the UK during the review period.
The following diagram summarises the trends in the UK electronic security systems market from 2000 to 2009
