EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

The UK market for electronic security systems is projected to increase by 3 percent at 2000 end user prices in 2001. MSI believe that the intruder alarms sector will continue to represent the largest proportion of the UK electronic security systems market in 2001. Furthermore, the UK market for intruder alarms is projected to increase by some 2 percent in real value terms in 2001. MSI believe that this increase will be due to the Association of Chief Police Officers requirements that all new alarm systems must be remote two signal systems. Furthermore, old systems with faults must be replaced by the new two signal systems that are compliant with the policy.

The UK market for central monitoring station services is projected to increase by 5 percent in real value terms in 2001. The central monitoring station services sector accounted for the second largest proportion of the UK market for electronic security systems throughout the review period. MSI believe that the growth in the market is largely attributable to the continuous reviews to the Association of Chief Police Officers policy, which was originally introduced in 1995. Indeed, the Association of Chief Police Officers policy prevents the police responding to an alarm call unless it is connected to a monitoring station.

MSI believe that the UK market for closed circuit television has shown strong growth during the review period. MSI project that the closed circuit television sector will rise by 5 percent in real value terms during 2001. MSI believe that the substantial growth in this sector is largely attributable to Home Office investment and technological developments.

The access control sector of the UK market for electronic security systems is expected to increase by 2 percent in real terms during 2001. MSI believe that growth during the review period in this sector has been mainly due to technological advances in this market, which have caused end users to update existing systems and to specify more sophisticated technology.

MSI believe that the factors that affect demand within the UK market for electronic security systems include:

There has been a large amount of acquisitional activity within the electronic security systems industry during the review period. Consequently, MSI believe that concentration within the industry has increased. The main objectives behind this acquisitional activity include: -

The recent terrorist attacks in the USA are expected to have a significant impact on the demand for electronic security products in the UK. Almost immediately following the events of the 11th of September 2001, trade sources reported an increase in enquiries for security systems, particularly CCTV systems and access control products. These enquiries are expected to translate into orders in late 2001 and early 2002, which will increase the value of the UK electronic
