EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

1                Key Findings
1.     The total value of the UK cabling and wiring market is estimated to have declined by 15 percent between 1998 and 2002 to £911.8 million (€1 449.8 million). This decrease is primarily due to negative economic conditions forcing end users to reduce investment and due to increasing imports into the UK market creating price erosion.
2.     Energy cables are estimated to account for the largest proportion of the total market in 2002, accounting for 51 percent of the market. The proportional importance of the telecommunications cable sector is estimated to have decreased by 5 percent between 1998 and 2002 to represent 20 percent of the total market in 2002. The data and control cable sector is also estimated to have lost market share to account for 22 percent of the market in 2002. The remaining 7 percent of the market is accounted for by winding wires.
3.     MSI believe the value of the UK market for energy cables decreased by 5 percent between 1998 and 2002 to £466.7 million (€742.1 million). However, the value of the telecommunication cable sector decreased by a significant 32 percent between 1998 and 2002 to £184.1 million (€292.7 million). The data and control cable market is estimated to have fallen by 18 percent in value terms, whilst the winding wire sector is estimated to have decreased by 10 percent between 1998 and 2002.
4.     There are a number of important factors that affect demand for cabling and wiring, including the state of the UK economy, the level of construction activity, the performance of end user sectors, technological advancements and the fire performance qualities of cable.
5.     The UK cabling and wiring market is forecast to recover gradually between 2003 and 2007, with the strongest growth occurring in the latter half of the forecast period. Indeed, the market is expected to increase by 6 percent in real terms during the forecast period.
6.     MSI have identified a number of factors that are critical to the success of companies operating in the UK market for cabling and wiring. These include:
·      price
·      quality and performance reliability
·      logistical excellence through efficient delivery
·      reputation and brand awareness
·      innovation and new product development
·      added value services
·      the use of IT and computer technology
·      investment in plant and machinery
·      identification of market trends and growing end user segments
