EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

MSI estimate that the value of the UK market for cabling and wiring increased by 6 percent during 2000 to reach £1.26 billion (€2.12 billion). The market is estimated to have increased by 24 percent between 1996 and 2000, primarily as a result of increased demand for specially constructed cables capable of carrying ever-increasing volumes of data for computer and multi?media devices.

Energy cables are estimated to have accounted for the largest proportion of the UK cabling and wiring market throughout the review period, accounting for 38 percent of the market in 2000. Telecommunication cables and data & control cables accounted for 31 percent and 25 percent of the market respectively, whilst the remaining 6 percent of the market was accounted for by winding wires. However, the proportional importance of the energy cables sector declined during the review period while the telecommunication cables sector and the data and control cables sector both increased in proportional importance.
