EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

In 1999 some 26 new CHP installations are believed to have been commissioned in the UK representing 305 MWe of new capacity. Taking into account some upgrades and closures, this resulted in 1313 CHP schemes being operational by the end of 1999 with a total capacity of 4239 MWe.

MSI have identified a number of factors which are believed to affect demand for CHP. These are:

* UK government policy
* legislation
* environmental issues
* economic factors
* electricity and gas prices
* corporate investment
* technological development

MSI believe that the chemical sector, oil refineries and paper industry account for a significant proportion of UK installed capacity in the industrial sector. This is due to these industries being very energy intensive and therefore are able to gain significant cost savings through the use of CHP.

MSI forecast that an additional 2157 MWe of CHP capacity at 36 host sites will be commissioned between 2000 and 2004.

MSI believe that the lifting of the restrictions on gas fired power stations will have a significant impact on the CHP market during the forecast period. Indeed, MSI forecast that it will have following implications on the UK CHP market:

* there will be fewer CHP schemes but the schemes that are installed will have a larger capacity
* sites that have CHP already installed will add more capacity to existing CHP plant

There are a number of factors that stimulate demand from end users for CHP plant, the most notable including:

* cost savings
* environmental benefits
* the need to improve efficiency
* the need to replace old obsolete plant
* environmental legislation
* expansion and future development
