EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
MSI believe that combined cycle gas turbine plant
has been the most buoyant sector of the UK power generation equipment market
during the review period. There are several major reasons why this has
occurred:
- - low gas prices
- - increased environmental
legislation
- - increases in generating capacity have been
required
- - quickly and cheaply
Combined cycle gas turbine plant is typically
cheaper and faster to build than other forms of power generation plant. As
developing capacity with low capital investment and with a short payback time
have been key purchase criteria in recent years, demand for combined cycle gas
turbine plant has increased. MSI believe that in order to get quickly
established in the UK electricity generation market after privatisation, many
generators invested in combined cycle gas turbine plant.
MSI estimate that the value of the UK market for
power generation plant was increased strongly in 1996 to reach £1.08
billion, representing the beginning of a second "dash for gas" phase, albeit a
more modest one than the first.
MSI believe that investment in some renewable
sources, notably hydro power, has been constrained in recent years because of
environmental concerns. Although investment in wind farms has been significant
during the review period, wind farms are perceived by many as being too noisy.
Moreover, there have also been objections to wind farms on aesthetic grounds as
suitable sites for wind farms are often in areas of outstanding natural beauty.
Investment in hydro power plant has been constrained for several reasons
including the limited number of suitable sites for large scale hydro stations
and the difficulty in getting funding. Hydro power stations are believed to
provide very low cost electricity once the capital costs have been repaid.
However, this takes a long time and the electricity is relatively costly in the
short term.
The relaxation of the regulations that govern the
supply of electricity in the UK has boosted the industrial combined heat and
power plant market in recent years because many sites that would not have been
considered previously, have now been made viable. MSI believe that the gas
turbine combined heat and power plant market has shown the most growth in value
terms during the period 1992 to 1996.
MSI believe the Office of Electricity Regulation
has a key influence on demand for power generation plant in the UK. The
Director General of Electricity Supply has sought to increase competition in
the industry, which has made investment in some plant more attractive than
others.
The structure of the UK electricity generation
industry has changed significantly over the review period. The market share of
the former nationalised companies, National Power and PowerGen, has declined
with regional electricity companies and independent suppliers increasing their
share of the generation market.
The structure of the power generation plant
industry consists of a relatively small number of companies that operate on a
global basis. MSI believe that this is due to the economies of scale and the
high research and development costs that are required. Nevertheless there are a
myriad of smaller companies supplying power generation plant with a capacity of
just a few megawatts.
