EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Although the UK market for pharmaceutical
manufacturing plant has increased during the mid 1990s, the increases have been
relatively small. Indeed, once the effects of inflation have been taken into
account the market has declined slightly in real terms during the review
period. MSI project that the UK pharmaceutical manufacturing plant market will
reach £519.9 million at 1996 msp in 1997.
There are a number of reasons why demand for
pharmaceutical manufacturing plant has been constrained during the review
period, including the restructuring of the global pharmaceutical manufacturing
industry which has resulted in excess UK production capacity. Moreover, many
pharmaceutical manufacturers are locating production sites in lower production
cost countries and nearer to end user markets. This has resulted in increased
investment in other countries, notably Pacific Rim countries, and reduced
investment in the UK.
Secondary manufacturing plant continues to account
for the majority of the pharmaceutical manufacturing plant and machinery,
accounting for some 66 percent of the market in 1997. Indeed the proportional
importance of secondary manufacturing equipment has increased during the review
period.
The relatively static market for pharmaceutical
manufacturing plant, in real terms, is in contrast to the continuing expansion
of the UK pharmaceutical market which increased in value by 42 percent during the
period 1993 to 1997.
MSI forecast that the UK market for pharmaceutical
manufacturing plant will increase during the period 1998 to 2002. The most
significant increases are expected to be towards the end of the forecast period
as the excess capacity at the time of writing is no longer prevalent and
investment in the UK increases.
A significant proportion of the equipment used in
pharmaceutical manufacture in the UK is imported, particularly from
manufacturers in other European countries. The strength of Sterling during 1997
has further increased the competitiveness of imported machinery into the
UK.
In addition to activity in the pharmaceutical
industry there are also a number of other factors which affect the market for
pharmaceutical manufacturing plant. One of the most important changes in recent
years was the introduction of patient packs which significantly increased
demand for packaging machinery.
Although the overall UK market for pharmaceutical
manufacturing plant has not increased significantly, some sectors of the market
have been more buoyant, such as storage tanks and packaging
equipment.
A further factor which has constrained the value
of the market is the buoyant trade in refurbished equipment, particularly in
the primary process plant sector.
