EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
MSI estimate that the UK market for air
conditioning equipment increased by 6 percent in 1996 to reach a value of £477.8
million at manufacturers' selling prices. Packaged air conditioning equipment
accounted for some 30 percent of the value of air conditioning equipment sold in the
UK during 1996 compared with 26 percent in 1992. The increase in the proportional
importance of the packaged sector was at the expense of central station air
conditioning equipment, sales of which grew by only 3 percent in nominal terms between
1992 and 1996.
The main factors affecting demand for air
conditioning equipment include:
- - construction trends
- - end users' performance
- - economic factors
- - temperature changes
- - legislation
- - government policy
Demand for air conditioning equipment is forecast
to rise by 23 percent in real terms between 1997 and 2001. This is expected to reflect
the forecast improvement in the UK economy and the positive effect that this is
expected to have on the construction industry.
The primary channel of distribution for packaged
air conditioning equipment is through distributors, which accounted for 50 percent of
total sales in volume terms in 1996. In contrast, the primary channel of
distribution for central station air condition equipment is through
contractors, which accounted for 92 percent of total sales in volume terms in the same
year.
Despite a strong rise in UK exports of air
conditioning equipment over the period 1992-1996, the UK trade deficit in air
conditioning equipment deepened to £87.4 million in 1996. This reflected
the 37 percent increase in imports during the year.
The UK air conditioning equipment industry is
becoming increasingly concentrated with Japanese and American companies
consolidating their market share. The level of concentration varies between
product sectors.
