EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Following a few years of stagnation, the market
for industrial fasteners is expected to increase by 4 percent in volume and by some 3 percent
in value in 1997, which reflects a widening recovery in many end user sectors,
coupled with severe price competition. The French market for industrial
fasteners is therefore projected to amount to FF4.5 billion (ECU0.7 billion) at
1996 prices in 1997, with a volume of 235 100 tonnes.
MSI estimate that bolts accounted for the largest
share of the market for industrial fasteners, with 33 percent of the total in volume
and 30 percent in value terms. Screws are projected to represent the second largest
sector in the industrial fasteners market. Most of the products are expected to
record a lower increase in value than in volume.
The French market for industrial fasteners is
influenced by a number of factors, including:
- - the economy
- - end user performance
- - changes in the French industrial fasteners
industry structure
- - pricing strategies
- - performance of competitive
products
- - technological improvements
Trade sources report that the high level of import
penetration is a result of an increasing number of low cost standard fasteners
being imported mainly from Asian countries. In contrast, French manufacturers
tend to focus on the production of specialist fasteners with a higher added
value to target more demanding end users.
The performance of end users is one of the major
factors affecting demand for industrial fasteners. Therefore the fortunes of
the automotive, construction and aerospace industries, which together account
for 74 percent of total industrial fastener sales, have a major influence on the
market. A recovery is expected in some of the end use sectors in 1997 which in
turn is expected to increase demand for industrial fasteners.
The distribution structure of the industrial
fasteners industry in France is very fragmented with a small number of
specialist distributors and many multi-product distributors. Trade sources
report that manufacturers increasingly supply directly to end users as a result
of a development of partnerships between manufacturers and end
users.
The manufacturing industry structure is believed
to be highly concentrated with a small number of manufacturers leading the
market for industrial fasteners. Some small companies concentrate on the
production of industrial fasteners for specific market segments.
