EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
During the recession of the early 1990s the UK
market for welding equipment and consumables declined significantly. However,
subsequently the market has begun to recover and increased in value by 2 percent and
3 percent in 1995 and 1996 respectively.
This trend has largely been attributable to the
first real increase in the demand for welding equipment for several years.
There are believed to be a number of reasons for the increase in demand
including:
- - a release of pent up demand
- - the adoption of new technology
- - the upgrading of equipment
The market for consumables has not increased
significantly due to the more efficient use of consumables and product
substitution.
MSI believe that the laser welding equipment
sector has shown the most value growth in percentage terms between 1992 and
1996, albeit from a very low level. The main reasons for the increase are
believed to be more user friendly products being developed and improved
technology which has increased the potential applications for laser welding
equipment.
The UK markets for MIG/MAG equipment and
consumables have increased during the review period as many end users have
converted from other types of welding equipment and consumables, notably
MMA.
In the consumables sector the improvements in the
quality of flux cored wire and more widespread acceptance of this technique by
end users has resulted in the value of this sector increasing the most in
percentage terms during the review period.
The demand for welding equipment and consumables
in the UK is related to the performance and nature of UK manufacturing.
Consequently, the growth in the domestic economy has benefited the market,
however the long term change in the structure of the UK manufacturing base has
adversely affected the market.
MSI forecast that the UK market for welding
equipment and consumables will increase significantly during the period 1997 to
2001. This is due to further automation of UK industry and upgrading of
equipment. MSI forecast that the market for gas welding equipment will decline
as users adopt electric welding methods. However, the rate of decline is
expected to slow towards the end of the forecast period.
There are a large number of welding equipment and
consumables suppliers in the UK and the market is very dynamic with many
distributors entering and leaving the market. One of the primary reasons for
companies being forced out of the market is the price competitive nature of the
industry.
