EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
MSI believe that the UK volume market for ferrous
castings increased by 3 percent in 1996 to 1.56 million tonnes, following a 5 percent
increase during 1995. This reflected an increase in demand from a number of
major end users as the UK economy began to recover.
Grey iron castings continued to account for the
largest proportion of the UK volume market for ferrous castings in 1996,
representing 54 percent of total demand. Spheroidal graphite iron has increased its
share of the volume market during the 1990s to represent 38 percent of the total in
1996, whereas the malleable iron market remains in long term
decline.
Factors affecting the level of demand for ferrous
castings include:
- - economic environment
- - end user sectors' performance
- - government policy and environmental
legislation
- - product/process substitution
- - production costs
Between 1997 and 2001, the UK volume market for
ferrous castings is forecast to grow by 7 percent to 1.73 million tonnes. Peak growth
of 4 percent is expected in 1997 with the rate of growth then forecast to
slow.
In 1995 UK production of ferrous castings was
increased by 5 percent in volume terms, followed by a further 3 percent increase in 1996. A
significant number of UK foundries produce more than one type of ferrous
casting, although grey iron continued to be the principal material type
produced in 1996.
In 1996 the number of ferrous foundries in the UK
was 19 percent lower than in 1993, reflecting the continuing trend of concentration
within the UK ferrous foundry industry. MSI believe that the majority of
ferrous castings production is undertaken by relatively few large
foundries.
During 1996 UK imports of ferrous castings
increased by some 13 percent to 91 300 tonnes due to the increase in the proportional
significance of lower cost imports from countries such as China and India. In
contrast, exports of ferrous castings are believed to have fallen by 14 percent in
1996 as a result of a rise in the value of Sterling, which resulted in the UK
ferrous foundry industry becoming less competitive in international
markets.
