KEY FINDINGS

i Definitions
For the purposes of this report wooden flooring is defined as hardwood flooring manufactured either as solid wood or multi-layered wood boards and is available in a number of forms, including:
strips
planks
parquet
wide board
Solid wooden flooring is defined as one piece of wood from top to bottom, produced in varying widths. Due to the nature of the product and the scarcity of resources, solid wooden flooring is more expensive to manufacture and therefore commands a higher price. Multi-layered boards are manufactured from individual layers of wood bonded together with adhesives at high temperatures. Multi-layered wood flooring is available in three and five ply and most often consists of a backing layer and a core, typically made of softwood such as pine. Covering these layers is a solid hardwood surface. A wide range of hardwoods may be used for this purpose. Both solid and multi-layered boards are available as pre-finished or unfinished products. Pre-finished floors have factory-applied finishes including ultra-violet cured urethane, water-based urethane, moisture-cured urethane, varnish and wax, whereas unfinished products are stained and coated on site.
i Definitions
Laminate flooring consists of several layers - a backing, a core, a decorative surface and a protective finish. The backing is used to form a moisture barrier to prevent distortion and provide a secure base for the core. The core constitutes the majority of the floor thickness and is made from processed wood such as medium-density fibreboard, high-density fibre or resin-bonded particleboard. The third layer of the flooring, the decorative surface, consists of one or more sheets of decorative material, usually paper, upon which an overlay finish is placed. This overlay typically consists of resin-coated cellulose that provides a hard wearing, durable surface.
All values are quoted at current manufacturers’ selling prices unless otherwise stated, and refers to the price charged by the manufacturer or importer to distributors and contractors, exclusive of VAT.
MSI has a policy of rounding numbers from five up to the next significant figure. Consequently, financial data may differ from source documents.
