LIST OF DIAGRAMS
1. The UK Market For Wall Insulation Products, By Product Type, 2000 32
2. Distribution Network For Cavity Wall Batts Insulation Materials, By Distribution Channel, 2000 60

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

The UK market for wall insulation is estimated to have decreased by 3 percent in 2000 to £148.2 million (€235.6 million). Between 1996 and 1999 the UK market for wall insulation products increased steadily, but the temporary cessation of government funding for the installation of wall insulation, whilst the funding scheme was under review, caused the market value to decline in 2000. However, MSI believe that this decline will be short-lived as funding has recommenced.

The UK wall insulation market can be segmented into three main product types. The largest sector was cavity wall insulation which accounted for 79 percent of the total market value in 2000. The other two sectors are external and internal wall insulation which accounted for 13 percent and 8 percent of the market respectively.

MSI has identified a number of factors affecting demand for wall insulation in the UK. These include:

The total market for wall insulation products is expected to grow by 34 percent in real terms between 2001 and 2005. New government schemes and initiatives combined with changes in building regulations are expected to produce a rapid increase in demand for wall insulation products throughout the forecast period. Cavity wall insulation will sustain the majority of this growth as it is expected to be at the forefront of the government's energy efficiency schemes and initiatives.

Critical success factors for companies supplying the UK wall insulation market include:

The distribution of wall insulation products varies according to the type of application they are used for. Insulation products produced for injected cavity wall insulation, external and internal wall insulation are typically distributed directly to the contractors. However, some 83 percent of insulation used in cavity wall batts is distributed through insulation stockists, whist the remaining 17 percent is distributed directly to end users.

The thermal insulation manufacturing industry is relatively concentrated. Indeed, some six companies accounted for approximately 65 percent of the wall insulation market in
