EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

MSI believe that the UK market for domestic fires and fireplaces increased in volume terms during the review period. However, as a result of declining prices, the market is believed to have declined in value terms.
The UK domestic fires and fireplaces market is influenced by construction trends in terms of new build and refurbishment, maintenance and improvement work. Furthermore, the refurbishment, maintenance and improvement work sector is of great importance to sales of domestic fires and fireplaces, representing an estimated 75 percent of the market in volume terms in 2000.
Domestic fires within the UK are fuelled by either gas, electricity or solid fuel. Throughout the review period gas continued to account for the largest proportion of sales, followed by electric and solid fuel. Indeed, gas fires represented 71 percent of the total market in volume terms in 2000.
The factors affecting the demand for domestic fires and fireplaces in the UK include the following:
* consumer tastes and expectations
* construction trends
* economy
