EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

The UK market for external wall cladding has increased steadily between 1995 and 1999. Indeed, it is believed that the market rose by 16 percent during this period to reach a volume of 28.25 million m2 in 1999. However, growth in demand was marginally higher between 1997 and 1999 than during the first half of the review period, reflecting increases in construction activity in the UK.

Indeed, UK construction activity is a principal factor which affects demand for external wall cladding. MSI believe that a number of other factors also affect demand in the market, these include:

Metal external wall cladding has dominated the UK market for external wall cladding throughout the review period accounting for some 66 percent of the market in 1999. Steel has commanded the largest proportion of sales of metal external wall cladding between 1995 and 1999. However, trade sources report that the material has lost market share to aluminium external wall cladding in recent years as the price of aluminium has fallen.

The proportional importance of composite external wall cladding is believed to have increased significantly between 1995 and 1999 from 13 percent to 17 percent. MSI believe that growth in sales of composite external wall cladding has been at the expense of other external wall cladding materials, notably metal external wall cladding. Sales of plastic external wall cladding have also increased, by a significant 26 percent, during the review period.

High pressure laminate external wall cladding is believe to have benefited from the increase in demand by specifiers for light weight external wall cladding systems. Indeed, this notable trend in the market, at the expense of heavy weight external wall cladding, has not only stimulated sales of high pressure laminate but also other systems such as composite external wall cladding.

Trade sources report that sales of pre-cast concrete cladding have been buoyant between 1995 and 1999, particularly in the latter years of the review period, increasing by some 17 percent to a volume of 275 000 m2 in 1999. Indeed, the increase in the use of prefabricated materials in the construction industry is believed to have encouraged demand for pre-cast concrete external wall cladding.

Sales of fibre cement external wall cladding have remained relatively stable between 1995 and 1999, reflecting to a degree the sector's maturity as an external wall cladding material. Natural stone and timber external wall cladding both represent only marginal shares of the total UK market for external wall cladding. Nevertheless, both sectors have shown growth in demand, reflecting overall growth in the UK market for external wall cladding between 1995 and 1999.

New build work accounted for the largest proportion of demand for external wall cladding in the UK in 1999. Indeed, overall, external wall cladding for new build work represented as much as 73 percent of total sales during the year, while refurbishment work represented the remaining 27 percent. However, MSI believe that the proportional importance of new build and refurbishment work does vary for the different material sectors of the market.

MSI forecast that the UK market for external wall cladding will continue to increase between 2000 and 2004. Indeed, it is expected that sales of external wall cladding will rise by some 9 percent in volume terms during the forecast period. The strongest growth rates are expected to be registered for composite external wall cladding, while demand for fibre cement, natural stone and timber external wall cladding is forecast to remain stable between 2000 and 2004.

Characteristically the UK external wall cladding industry is fragmented, with many manufacturers specialising in the production of specific external wall cladding materials. However, in recent years there has been a degree of consolidation in the industry. MSI believe that the most significant merger in 1999 was that of British Steel and Koninklijke Hoogovens, which joined together to form Corus Group during the year.
