EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

In 1996 the UK market for domestic windows, doors and conservatories decreased by 1 percent in nominal terms to a value of £2.87 billion at retail sales prices. MSI believe that the market began to decline in 1995 following three years of modest growth.

MSI estimate that windows represented 68 percent of the total value of the UK domestic windows, doors and conservatories market in 1996. A further 24 percent of the market was accounted for by doors, which represented a value of £689 million at retail sales prices. The conservatories sector enjoyed the most significant growth for the period, increasing in value by up to 10 percent between 1992 and 1994. Nevertheless, the value of the market is believed to have declined in both 1995 and 1996.

Sales of domestic windows and doors to the public sector declined throughout the period under review to a value of just œ608 million in 1996. This has been largely due to cuts in government funding to The Housing Corporation and in local authority budgets.

The principal factors affecting the demand for domestic windows, doors and conservatories in the UK include the level of total housing construction output, the state of the housing market, demographic trends and legislation regarding the thermal efficiency of buildings.

MSI forecast that the UK market for domestic windows, doors and conservatories will display modest growth in real terms over the five years from 1997 to 2001, as a result of an upturn in the level of total housing construction output.

During the period under review, the UK distribution structure for domestic windows, doors and conservatories was characterised by the relative decline of direct sales, an increase in the importance of builders' merchants and a move by some suppliers towards vertical integration. MSI estimate that in the double glazing sector, some 80 percent of products were sold directly in 1996 in volume terms compared with 86 percent in 1995.

The domestic windows and doors industry in the UK is relatively fragmented. The majority of the larger companies operating in the industry are involved in the manufacture and installation of more than one product type. However, there are a few specialist companies whose main activities focus on just one product type.
