EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

MSI believe that the German market for domestic windows, doors and conservatories increased by a marginal 1 percent in 1996 to a value of DM18.77 billion (ECU9.95 billion) at retail sales prices.

Sales of windows accounted for the largest proportion of the total market in value terms during 1996. However, the sector which recorded the strongest increases between 1992 and 1996 were sales of conservatories with a growth rate of as much as 41 percent.

There are a number of factors influencing demand for windows, doors and conservatories, including the following:

- German reunification
- construction output
- environmental trends
- long term costs
- demographic trends
- weather

MSI forecast that the German market for domestic windows, doors and conservatories will decrease marginally in 1997 and 1998. However, for the remainder of the forecast period further growth in the market is forecast due to the recovery of the construction market.

Trade sources report that in Germany some 40 percent of windows and exterior doors are distributed through specialised building products distributors, builders' merchants and local craftsmen. For the distribution of domestic windows and exterior doors the role of local craftsmen is especially important. Some 92 percent of the total volume of interior doors are reported to be sold through specialised building products distributors, builders' merchants and craftsmen.

Traditionally the German windows and doors industry has been characterised by a high number of local craftsmen. Indeed, trade sources report that in 1996 some 11 000 manufacturers of windows and exterior doors operated on the German market. The sector of manufacturers of interior doors is characterised by a large number of medium sized companies. Furthermore, there are reported to be some 500 manufacturers of conservatories.
