EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

1. The German market for roofing materials declined by 11 percent between 1995 and 1998 in volume terms. The fall in demand for roofing materials during this period reflected the difficult trading conditions in the German construction industry. However, in 1999 total sales of roofing materials in Germany rose by 1 percent, as the economic conditions and consequently the construction industry improved in Germany.

2. Pitched roofing materials are believed to be the most widely used type of roofing in Germany, accounting for some 49 percent of the total market in 1999. The proportional importance of pitched roofing of the market for roofing materials has increased during the review period at the expense of flat roofing materials.

3. Within the pitched roof sector the use of concrete tiles was reduced significantly during the review period. Indeed, the proportional importance of concrete tiles decreased to 42 percent of the total market for pitched roofing materials in 1999. However, clay tiles gained in terms of proportional importance from 39 percent in 1995 to 47 percent in 1999 with a total roof area covered in Germany of an estimated 52.1 million m².

4. The largest proportion of the flat roofing market in Germany was accounted for by bituminous roofing felts, with which a roof area of 53.9 million m² was covered in 1999. Sales of plastic sheets and liquid plastic roof covering materials rose in 1999. Demand in both these sectors had declined during the review period, mirroring the overall trend in the German market for roofing materials.

5. Steel represents the largest sector of the German metal roofing market with an estimated roof area of 6 million m² covered in 1999. Zinc accounted for the second largest proportion of metal roofing sales throughout the review period. Demand for aluminium sheets is believe to have decreased by 14 percent during the review period, while sales of copper fluctuated to a degree.

6. A number of factors affect demand for roofing materials. The most significant factor is the performance of the German construction industry which in turn is influenced by the economy. The level of German government funding, legislation and environmental concerns are other factors, which influence the German roofing market.

7. MSI forecast that the German market for roofing materials will increase throughout the forecast period. Indeed, the total market is forecast to increase by some 7 percent in volume terms between 2000 and 2004. This is due to the recovery of the German economy which is expected to fuel investment in construction output. Demand is expected to rise in all three sectors of the German roofing materials market. The flat roofing materials sector is forecast to increase the most significantly during the five year period. Indeed, sales of flat roofing materials are expected to increase by 11 percent between 2000 and 2004.
